An Island and One Night
a film by the Pirates of the Lentilles 2021-2023 – 1h40 – eleven different languages, with no subtitles – all public
An Island and One Night is a fictional film made collectively over the past two years by the inhabitants and usagre of the Quartier Libre des Lentillères, a self-managed place extending over the last vegetable lands of the city of Dijon.
These 8 hectares have been occupied and reopened for 13 years, in resistance to a concrete ecocity project that still threatens them today. In the middle of the city, these unused spaces and abandoned houses have become a self-managed district, intertwining collective habitat, market gardening, self-construction, festive and cultural events, etc. It is a place of struggles and solidarity of all kinds and a real reserve of biodiversity.
In this film we use the prism of the imagination to talk about the real, about what we’re experiencing here, how we’ve gotten there, what we’re looking for, and what we’re fighting against every day. It’s a musical and dance fiction, no hero or a heroine, with houses that are boats (and vice versa), pirates of all kinds and all full of different languages… In short, the Quartier Libre des Lentillères is an island with treasures through the eyes of cinema.
Self-produced, self-broadcast, based on voluntary participation, this film shot on a 16mm silver film was built throughout the life of the place, in correlation with it, at the rhythm of events and seasons. From writing to editing and filming, each step was collective and participatory, in an open-ended know-how-sharing approach.
The film’s music consists of original pieces composed during the film’s directing as well as pre-existing pieces from bands that support us and played in the Quartier in the past. Some screenings of the film may also be preceded or followed by a concert by one of the bands appearing in the film.
The distribution of an island and one night will be done first by itinerant projections – at free or free prices, in this non-market continuity. Beyond the pleasure of sharing this creation with a wide and diverse audience, this tour will be an opportunity to transmit through the meeting our experience of struggle, self-management and invention of collective forms of life aimed at living well for all and respectful of life.
Around the fire, travellers and pirates tell each other their memories, their dreams, their battles. From one language to another, from narrative to narrative are heard by the rumble of the storm and the rustling of the leaves, the menacing sirens and the frenzied dances, the shock of the swords and the song of the birds. Until dawn, a thousand and one paths of this imaginary yet real island emerge.

Eine Insel und eine Nacht ist ein Spielfilm, der in den letzten zwei Jahren kollektiv von den Besetzer innen des “Quartier Libre des Lentilleres” realisiert wurde.
Dieser selbstverwaltete Ort rettet die letzten Anbauflächen von Dijon. Im Widerstand gegen ein Betonbauprojekt, das sie immer noch bedroht, sind diese acht Hektar seit dreizehn Jahren besetzt und werden wieder kultiviert. Mitten in der Stadt, hat sich diese verwildete Fläche in einen selbstorganisierten lebendigen Kiez verwandelt. Heute wird dort massiv gepflanzt, lustig gebaut, zusammen gefeiert, kulturell überrascht, usw. Es ist ein Ort des Widerstands und der Solidarität jeder Art, sowie ein Biodiversitätsrefugium.
In diesem Film nutzen wir Fantasie und Einbildungskraft um unseren Alltag auszudrücken : wie wir dort leben, wie wir angekommen sind, was wir dort suchen und wogegen wir jeden Tag kämpfen. Es ist ein Musical ohne Held*innen. Häuser werden zu Schiffen und andersherum. Pirat*innen jeder Sorte und jeglicher Sprachen… Kurz und gut, durch den Blick der Kamera wird das Quartier Libre des Lentillères zur Schatzinsel.
Selbstproduziert, selbstverbreitet wurde dieser Film mit 16 mm analog gedreht. Er hat sich parallel zum Lentilleresalltag entwickelt, je nach Ereignissen und Jahreszeiten. Schreiben, Schneiden, Drehen- alle Arbeitsphasen fanden kollektiv statt. Und das alles im Sinne der Weitergabe des Wissens von allen für alle.
Bei der Musik im Film handelt es sich um eigens komponierte Stücke oder bereits vorher bestehende Werke von uns unterstützenden Bands, die bei uns gespielt haben.
Um den unkommerziellen Aspekt weiter zu fördern, können wir im Rahmen unserer Tournee auf Wunsch Aufführungen organisieren, die immer kostenlos oder gegen Spende sein werden. Abgesehen von der Freude diese Kreation mit einem breiten und vielfältigen Publikum zu teilen, ist diese Tournee die Gelegenheit im Austausch von unserer Erfahrung der Kämpfe, der Selbstverwaltung und der Erfindung kollektiver Lebensformen mit dem Ziel des guten Lebens für alle und dem Schutze des Lebendigen zu berichten.
Rum um ein Feuer erzählen sich Reisende und Pirat*innen ihre Erinnerungen, ihre Träume und ihre Kämpfe. Von einer Sprache zur anderen, von einer Erzählung zur nächsten hören wir das Donnern des Sturms und das Rauschen der Blätter, die drohende Sirene und die verrückten Tänze, der Klang der Säbel und das Zwitschern der Vögel. Bis zur Morgendämmerung wandeln wir auf den tausend und ein Wegen dieser eingebildeten aber dennoch existierenden Insel.
